Heart and Lung Transplant Trust (Victoria) Inc. ("HLTTV") organized the 2016 Tour de Transplant, a 5 day cycling challenge from 2nd to 6th March 2016. A second Tour to help those with a second chance at life!

The Ride

The route covered 600km along the most amazing and scenic parts of the Great Ocean Road and was led by Australian cycling legend Phil Anderson. As well as the personal challenge of the ride, participants raised funds for HLTTV's Second Chance Accommodation Program.

Why 600km? To acknowledge the 600 regional Victorian and interstate heart and lung transplant recipients who have needed help with accommodation since transplants began at The Alfred Hospital, Melbourne in 1989.

THE 2016 TOUR HIGHLIGHTS

The Tour was a once-in-a-lifetime chance to spend 5 days learning from one of Australia's true sporting icons. Phil was the first non-European to wear the yellow jersey on the Tour de France and won 2 stages.  He is also a Commonwealth Games gold medallist.

The Cause

The Alfred is Australia's leading transplant hospital for both adults and children.  The Alfred's transplant units don't just provide services to people from Melbourne - people from all over Australia journey to The Alfred to receive this life-saving surgery.  For 3 months after transplant, recipients need to attend frequent, often daily, check ups and rehabilitation.  This 3 months of care is vital to recovery and long term survival after transplant.

For people who live outside of Melbourne, staying close to the hospital is extremely expensive, and adds a significant financial burden at an already very difficult time.  The Second Chance Accommodation Program makes staying near The Alfred affordable for transplant recipients and their carers.

Providing accommodation for 3 months is not cheap.  Every $2,500 raised on the Tour will help one family with subsidised accommodation for 3 months; $10,000 covers the cost of one apartment for a whole year and helps 4 recipients and the people who love them.

All donations over $2 are tax-deductible. HLTTV is entirely volunteer run and every dollar goes directly to supporting transplant families.

SECOND CHANCE   TOUR ROUTE   TRANSPLANT RECIPIENTS

The Tour is raising funds for HLTTV’s Second Chance Accommodation Program.  A place for heart and lung transplant patients to call home in the months following transplant. Every $ you donate directly helps families; HLTTV is entirely volunteer run, staff costs are nil.

The route will take us along the Great Ocean Road from Warrnambool, through Port Campbell, Apollo Bay, Lorne, Angelsea and Bells Beach with a few challenging detours.  Finally heading through the Bellarine peninsula to Geelong and the return to Melbourne. Details here.

The length of the ride is significant - 1km for every heart and lung transplant recipient who have come from regional Victoria or interstate and needed accommodation after transplant.

Accommodation is required for 3 months during the necessary post transplant surgery rehabilitation.
