Matthew rides again
Growing up I'd always look forward to my grandpa driving down from Sydney and taking me and my brothers for a bike ride. As we all got older the separation between our abilities was obvious, my grandpa and brothers would often ride 60 kilometers into the city while I'd manage 20 to 30 at the most. In my mid teens however I started to have some serious arrhythmia issues and could no longer ride.
13 months after my heart transplant I got back on my bike, better than ever, half my life later!
Making up for lost years, I visited my Grandpa in Adelaide and rode into the city with him.
While the Tour de Transplant is a personal challenge for myself having my transplant and living close to the Alfred has helped me understand the importance of the Second Chance Accomodation Program.
For the first time in my life my health is amazingly stable and I was able to travel overseas. After many years of watching it late at night on TV I was also able to see the finish of the Tour de France in Paris on the Champs-Élysées.

The Heart and Lung Transplant Trust (Victoria) Inc. is a not-for-profit association whose membership consists of heart and lung transplant patients, recipients, their carers and families.
Our vision is for a bright and active future for all those involved with or in need of a heart or lung transplant. We actively encourage organ donation and support The Alfred Hospital Melbourne, the transplant team, patients, recipients, their families and carers throughout the journey.
Formed in 1994, five years after The Alfred Hospital performed its first pioneering heart transplant, HLTTV is managed by a committee of dedicated volunteers who have each experienced the heart or lung transplant journey. We are a partner of DonateLife and are a Deductible Gift Recipient, so donations of $2 and over are tax-deductible.
